This question gets asked a lot. You can put in whatever you want. It all depends on your mechanical abilities and what you can afford.

Agree with Chris...you can really swap in any RWD engine and tranny. It just depends on your skill set and your bank account. The more common swaps are the SB 350 if you want to go the V8 route there are a lot of options and they are fairly easy to come by/ complete. Or if you want to go the 4 cyl. route there are several of those to from the FE3 to the 2JZ or even the F20C. It has a lot to do with what you are looking to get out of it also. Do some research there are lots of options out there!

One for the least modification to truck I have done: GM 4.3 vortec v6. I used 4 speed automatic. Truck modifications, NONE. Build the engine to your liking, put it in (leave the distributor out for this and exhaust manifolds off). Use flex fan, make motor saddles for 77 chevy motor mounts (these will sit on original mounts on frame. Just mark where to drill holes, raise engine, pull through bolt and drill bolt-up holes in the saddles.), make transmission mount or cross member. Automatic stock shifter can be modified and use. Have drive shaft made. Use original radiator. Then the details. Left exhaust manifold can be cut and brazed clear frame. Modify routing of emergency brake. Just details left.
Only modification may be a hood scoop?
