Actually for most of you this decision would likely be easy.
After a few weeks going back and forth every day I have made up my mind.
I had to choose between two very different careers that I have worked at my current employer.
Mechanical design - sitting at a computer, designing machines, what I went to school for
Or
A 3 year machining apprenticeship which leads into a machine build position - building the machines, what I have dreamt of doing.
This morning I told the GM that I have decided to do the apprenticeship. I don't think I could ever pass up an opportunity like that. However great designing these machines would be I think this is the right choice.
Of course I will miss out on designing the new machines for Tesla and many other awesome jobs but at least I will be able to say I made some of the parts!
I would have loved to do both jobs which is why this decision was impossible. But I am a hands on guy and I have plenty time to sit at a computer when I'm older.
Just wanted to share this pivitol moment.

sounds like you make the right decision, think you will have alot more fun doing the hands on building vs sitting in front of a computer all day.

You gotta do what your heart says to do. Sounds like you made the choice best for you.
Congrats on the apprenticeship!

Who knows what the future holds.I am a manufacturing engineer.. but get to design and build small machines.. as well as spec, support, launch big ones.. nice compromise. Cause like you I like both good luck.

Yeah you guys are all right. I don't know what the future holds but I am a lot better off building things then just designing. I have tons of ideas and having a means to translate them to reality is a must have.
I have second guessed my decision a lot while working the last few weeks in design. I really love them both but I suppose design can be a good hobby and maybe even a side business.
