What type of business first?
Every kind of business is going to be a little different. If your starting a custom truck business and your going to be painting cars and such, you'll be dealing with the EPA for sure.......and that's going to be a hassle! If your starting a construction business or home repair type business, you'll basically just need to pay for a occupational license with your city or county and get some insurance and any other documentation that your local government will want you to have....Workers Comp. or an exemption for it maybe.
You should be able to go to your County Administration Building and talk to someone there about starting a business also, plus, you'll need to open a business checking account also, I would think.

I didn't say anything before because I thought you were testing the waters but let me know if you want a vendor forum.

I just also wanted to say that for businesses it's important that everything you do any where, even online supports your image. I'm not trying to be a dick but even your grammar and spelling can make you look unprofessional.

The guides online for business plans you saw are probably for those seeking investors like a bank. They will require a business plan before giving you a business loan so they can see what their money will be used for and how you plan to pay them back.

Since you are starting out you should be able to keep it simple.

1. Define your business name and location.
2. Define what you are going to sell and how you are going to sell it.
3. Define the staff members and their roles. It's important to show the chain of command.
4. Estimate your operating costs, and what equipment you need to start.
5. Define your market.

These are in no order and off the top of my head. Others may have better advice. Although I have a degree and make some money on the side with my businesses I've never made enough to support myself 100%. It may help to take an entrepreneurship class at a local community college. There are books out there that are good too to get you started.

One of my fav mags on business. You'll find all kinds of things on their site.

I wouldn't worry too much about a biz plan unless you are seeking finance help. I doubt you are. Here's what I needed in NC when I ran an auto parts store from my home...online.

First off check with your City office to make sure it's ok for you to do this from your home, zoning, etc. Asking questions and checking this doesn't cost. They can also tell you the direct steps in the order you need to take, but I'll tell ya what I know below, just may not be in order.

D.B.A. - This is a form that says you're doing business as _____________. If you're not using your own name, then you need to file what name your "shop" will be. For me it was "VDubs and Tuners". Cost me like $8 or so at the clerk of court I think it was. (it's been a while).

Once you know your zoning is ok, get a business license from your City office. Ours were like $12/yr.

You'll be running a Sole-Proprietor type business.

Here, that's all I really needed. I set up an Ebay store and a web page and got busy. I got suppliers, and started posting ads. Stupid me though got screwed on one deal and then I basically stopped. This was at the height of the tuner days too, and I was making a little money lol. Now I kick my self and can't figure out what to do now. So don't quit once you really get it going! Good luck!
