Yea so my car is screeching when its cold - only happens in some gears and in medium-high revs

Cambelt maybe?

Edit: Car = 1990 b2000

check all of the belts. could be your a/c kicking in and the belts are loose so it screeches only at certain times

jsut check all the belts lol...not the timing belt...that doesnt screech

Yeah, if your cambelt screech, your head will be toast. (valves bent, piston top dented or busted, etc.)

Haha ok, still showing how little i know about cars .

So the fan belt (ac belt thing), Can i tighten it my self or is it something for someone else do to.

It would make sense that its the ac belt - when i have the heater on it screeches heaps more than when its not on

mine did it to, the fan belts were just too loose.
u might need to replace them they are very cheap, but try to adjust them first.
get a haynes manual and it tells u how to exactly do it step by step.

do you have any spray lubes on hand (wd40, or penitrating lube)?
if yes... simple way to check whats squeeking... rev the engine up untill it squeeles... (dont blow it... if you do... ur not blaming me)...
once you found that point, shut the engine down like normal... open the hood, and spray the alternater pully/belt, so you get some lube between there... start it up, and rev it to that point again. IF it doesnt squeel any more (or stops momentarily), thats your problem
9 out of 10 its the alternater belts... if it DOESNT stop when you spray the alternater belt, respray it and try again... if it still doesnt stop, spray the water pump belt/pully... theres only a few belts on theese engines, so you only got 2 main choices...

Then when you find the problem, loosen the alternater (or water pump, but i dought that)... its two bolts, one on top, the other on the bottom... then press hard against it, forcing the alternater away from the main pully assembly... then (under tention), tighten both bolts...
Helps to have two people, put less experianced person pushing the alternater, and have the other more experianced person tighten the bolts, because they like to strip, then you get to have fun going to a hardware store and whatnot...

there should be a quater inch deflection when you press down hard (like the amount of force for knocking on a door)...

If it goes away, great, fixed for now...
If it doesnt, replace the belt, or apply some belt dressing (but that gets messy, quickly, if you dont know how)
reason i know all of this, is because mine was slipping, and it was annoying as all hell... and i have a streak of belt dressing underneith my hood, and on the inner fender panals ;p
