I'm wondering if a bad diaphram in the mechanical fuel pump would be a likely cause, anyone else experienced this?

Dirt could be getting in somehow. It could be because your engine is old and has a lot of miles on it. Mine does the same thing sometimes.

a bad diaphram will not have anythignt o do with this. your fuel and oil systems are completly seperate. Oil turns black because the oil is being broken down. High friction, high heat, contaminations can make it black. Also if your PCV valve is unefenctive it will cause your unburnt vapors to mix and make your oil very dark and contaminated. Hope I could help

If you changed your oil 3 or 4 times in a row it would be clean, but without flushing the old stuff out, how can you expect just drainign the plan to make it clean.
