I have done a little research on dry sumps BUT havn't found too much usefull info. What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of the dry sump system Are they a "Race Only" system or can they be used on a daily driver / cruiser.
I know that they are crank driven, require an external tank, and different oil pan. What else can you all tell me about them. I have seen some pretty good "claimed increase in power" with the dry sump system.

the b2200 motor has a dry sump, from what i understand, a dry sump oil pump won't flow unless primed, no advantages what soever over a wet sump which doesn't have to be primed before initial startup of the motor, infact i think a wet sump would be better cause if the dry sump lost prime then you wouldn't be pumping oil through the engine, and would have major damage to the engine.

ok so if we are supposed to prime the oil pump how do you do it. i know on a chevy you can with parts from a old dis and a drill but how do you do it on our trucks

I was thinking about putting one in the 4.3 I'm swapping into my reg. cab.

the only way i know of is if the motor is out of the truck and on a stand w/ valve covers on. flip the engine over w/o the oil pan on, pore oil into the pump pickup, then take a wrench and manually turn the motor over and repeat several times(this will prime the pump), put the oil pan back on, flip the motor back over, fill the rest of the way with oil to the recomended capacity (including what you put into the pump) and then take off the valve cover, manually crank the motor over several times until oil comes out in the head.

cant do that i never pulled the motor but what i did do was this befor a put it on the other day i filled it with oil and turned it a few times refilling it afterwords. then today befor i started the truck i took off the 8mm allen head cap thats on the left side (looking at the motor from the front of the truck) and put some more in there and truned the motor over a few times by hand then put the cap back. with the valve cover off (was putting in a new seal that was laying around in the cab) i had her try and start it with me gone adjust the dis. well it started frist lick instead of just turning over. needless to say oil went everywere. so i put a towel over it to check. just to make sure this time i had her start it and its pumping oil good and the oil light is not on (i did the check by eye cuase i did not know the condtion of the sending unit befor hand). so i guess thats anthor way of priming it.
