My friggin truck smokes like a friggin Freight Train. It rolls outa cloud when i start it that is so thick that you can walk through it and see an outline of yourself in it. When i'm goin down the road it rolls enough smoke that i can see it in the headlights behind me. The people at the drive-through window ask me to turn my truck off. My truck is looking good layed out somewhere and when i go to leave it looks like a peice of junk when i start it. I cant stand it. I have talked to several people that have had mazda issues before around here and most of them have said that 80% of the smoke problems i am having is from my valve stem seals and not my rings. Mind you my truck has somewhere in the neighborhood of 250,000 miles on it and the last 75,000 of them have been hard on it.

What ya'lls opinion on what to do about my smoke issues? I don't want to take the time to put valve stem seals in it if its just going to smoke as bad when i get done. It took me 2 GALLONS of oil to go to Myrtle Beach and back. Please help me calm my anger towards my truck.

yeah dude.. u need to rebuild that top end. Bad piston rings, valve seals or both. LOL. Go get the head off a motor somewhere (if you know someone selling a mazda motor). Rebuild it time and $$ permitting. And one weekend swap the heads out. While your at it you can do other maitenence and make sure everythings good.

i use to have that same problem. except mine wasnt as bad. it only did it when i would 1st start it up in the morning for about 5 min or so. my truck had about 163,000 miles on it and then i finally got the money to rebuild it. i wouldnt just rebuild parts of it. if you have the money, go ahead and get it all rebuilt, b/c seeing that it smokes that bad and uses that much oil, your block is prolly scratched and its gonna need to be bored out. besides, when they rebuild the whole motor, they replace, vlaves, valve seals, pistons, piston rings, rods, bearings, oil pump, spark plug wires and a lot of other things as well. if you dont have the funds for it then ofcourse do what you can, but a full engine rebuild will be the best solution

If the truck has gobs of power but smokes, its the valve seals.

If the truck is down on power and the oil is black, its the rings.

You can take the oil cap off and see if you smell blow by, thats rings.

I have seen trucks with ring problems that just had the rings stuck with carbon.

Here is my nefs, I thought this thread was going to be a competition haha

^^^^ looks like cheech & chong where in the truck j/k haha!

mine use to smoke like the one in the pic, when they tore the motor down
one of the rings on cyl 2 & 4 were broke, and the valve guide & seals were shot as well, but the cyl walls weren't damaged, and the head wasn't cracked or warped...lucky me. best bet would be to rebuild the whole thing, but if you can't do the head first, save up some money and to the bottom end.

good luck bro...i feel your pain/anger!

Preciate the opinions/ideas on that one. I have not had the time to drive it here lately cause been using my fullsize to move some stuff, but i bet when i start it next time it will smoke that bad. I probably just put valve stem seals in it for now cause its got plenty of power, and it runs excellent, just smokes.

my truck smokes like you describe and I had my head rebuilt, ported & polished, valves all cleane dup,new head gasket installed and all new seals.

Still smokes. bad. The truck runs mint, other than the smoke. I'm hoping it's just carbon build up on the rings. I'm running some cleaners in it right now, giving it a few days to clear up. If worst comes to worst,it's a rebuild.

But yeah, what an embarrassing problem to have. I park my truck at the far end of the parking lot at work and after work,I wait for everyone else to leave before I fire it up and smoke out the parking lot, lol.

Hi, last year i started putting 15w40 shell rotella diesel oil in the maz. When the engine is hot it holds a more constant oil pressure and most importantly stoped the smoking. Before if i'd let the truck sit more than 2 days it would smoke real bad and have the infamous tick for like 2 minutes. This year the truck sat 5 months and had no tick and no smoke, it probably hasn't smoked for a little over a year. Plus it's only 7.50 a gallon and has an excellent additive package. I use this oil in anything that has a flat tappet cam as it still has zinc. Give this a shot, Cheaper than a rebuild.
