The fuel tank for my Mazda has been sitting for a long time.
I pulled this truck from the woods where it had sat for like 6 yrs.
Neadless to say the fuel is bad and has turned to gum.
Anyone got any ideas how to disolve this stuff.

So far 2 gallons of Purple Power, and 2 gallons of Clorox has yet to do the job.

get a POR 15 kit, it comes with 3 different stepes, the first two are cleaning and the last one is the sealer, I used it on a friends truck and it worked great.

ole varnish in the tank aye? try some pain thinner to clean it out, but like lucky13 said after its clean you need to use a sealer of some sort
after you get the varnish out.

Worked for me too...

I removed the tank from the frame, cleaned up the outside (there was some corrosion) and discovered 6 pinholes in the tank, all in the forward section. I guess it's from rocks and debris hitting there first??

I went to the local carwash and spent $5 (3 washes with soap and 2 washes to rinse). The tank looked pretty clean to me so I brought it home and let it air out for a week before I reinstalled.

I thought about buying an internal tank sealing kit but the price in Canada is prohibitive. As for the price charged by garages that "recondition" gas tanks, I can almost buy a new tank for the price.

Anyhow, I went to Canadian Tire and bought some pinhole sealing putty for $4 and I haven't had a leak since.

The weather was finally nice enough yesterday to swap my faulty carb for an eBay special and the truck started on the second try. Now all I have to do is check the idle and she'll be fine.
