what are my options? im a decent welder and such, and wiring doesnt scare me .

im thinking the miata engine, maybe a rb nissan motor or a ford 5.0 motor.

or maybe just turbo the stock motor?

its really upto you my friend. You can get a b2200 motor , a b2000 motor , a b2600i fi (fuel injected) motor as long as you get the harness and computer with the motor . you can get a motor from a kia sportage , or you can do the miata motor swap . ford 5.0 swap ( see baggedb22 For info on his 5.0 swap. . But doing a 5.0 swap means you also have to do the trans , and swap the rear out for another rear . with the miata swap you can put a rx7 rear in the back . you can do a a chevy 4.3 motor trans combo . It all matters what you want and what your willing to spend money wise and time wise.

why would i have to swap rear ends? couldnt i just use the rear end i have and get a custom driveshaft that would hook to the 5.0's T5 tranny and still use the mazda's rear end?

and is the miata a straight bolt in motor swap, and can i use my own tranny?

the factory rear is only able to handle the wopping 86hp compared to the stock 5.0's 286hp.The factory rear will definately self destruct.

Well i can help u out with pretty much everything u'll need to no for the sbf swap, Although mines not a 5.0 its a 5.8 351w, but pretty much the same concept. The stock mazda rear will take a pretty good beatin but spining 1 tire is not for me=) and it is geared way to low for a 3spd auto, so make sure u do a 5spd or a overdrive tranny if ur not gonna swap rears right now im in the middle of redoing my 4link,rear bag mounts and shocks to put a 98 ford mustang 8.8 LSD disc brake rear with 3.27's instead of the 3.90's in the stock mazda rear. Wiring on the sbf's is very simple as long as u use an electronic dizzy, and the ignition box, everything plugs in from there and u have power to the hole engine, dizzy, coil, alternator. Let me no if u have any other questions,

But unless u really beat it the mazda rear should hold up for awhile, i've thrown about 320hp at it and it didn't phase it untill i really beat it.

that is intresting. I must have beaten my poor regular cab up pretty hard. I'm on my 3'rd rear end with the stock motor. this one has lasted 10 years of intermittent driving but the other 2 I beleive was the spider gears on them both. one snapped when I was taking a corner at 110 km off the highway.

not exactly, need ecu, tranny, & adapt to the driveshaft & change motormounts.....

go for something radical like a porsche boxter engine which puts out gobbs of power but is still fuel efficient....gas prices aren't going to go back down so that is always something to keep in mind.
