Ford edis-
This is a standalone igniton control system utlizing coil packs, a crank trigger pickup wheel and a control unit/ ignition box. It can be found on ford escorts, some 626's, a variety of cars.
It is a wasted spark ignition system, so it fires 2 cylinders at once, but only 1 cylinder uses the spark energy- the other cylinder doesn't use it- so it's a wasted spark.
The kia sportage also ultized a wasted spark igntion system- and you can re use the stock kia coil packs with ford edis system. However, kia's igintion control module is built into it's pcm- and is not a standalone system.
To make it work- you'll need a crankshaft trigger, with ford's 36 toothed minus 1 tooth trigger wheel attached to the crank- and a VR sensor pointed at the wheel to "time" the ignition.
The system runs at 10 advance all the time in standalone mode. Once a controler of some kind is in communication with it (like megasquirt) then it can recieve information to advance or retard ignition timing.
It's a slick setup- becuase you can really dial in your timing adance for almost any setup- and plenty of spark energy with the coil pack.
EDIS also uses a multispark below 1100 rpm I believe- on each igniton event it fires multiple times to acheive a smoother idle.
This is all just off the top of my head- some basic information about edis and how it applies to us.
