It definitely has raised a concern of my inner curiousity.

I'll be driving and hit 2nd gear, but when I shift into it, it has some resistance before what I would say a "click" occurs and then goes all the way in 2nd. 3rd gear also does this.

When you downshift from 3rd to 2nd, you have to be slow enough before you can even go into 2nd. It won't even allow you to do this. Well, maybe I caused the previously stated above, by going into 2nd from 3rd and holding it to go into 2nd until it goes when I slow down? But I never do this in third because I usually never down shift much to 3rd gear at high speeds.

Eh, just had to explain a possible cause on behalf of my ignorance. I dunno if this is a big problem, or progressing, but its better to know better about it. So do any of you have an answer to this?

I asked my dad, and he feels it may be the synchros wearing out?

check the tranny fluid

Loose shifter linkage (replace bushings),bad throw-out bearing,or syncros are worn out.Alsoas Slammed 83 posts,check tranny fluid.BJ

Okay, well, I checked my manual and it does'nt tell me how to check the fluid!

How do I check it?

My dad thinks that its not the shifter linkage because he things it would occur in all grears. He also thinks the throwout bearing is not the cause. A totally different part which is apart of the cluth not the transmission.

He still thinks the synchros can be bad, too.

I was almost happy to hear how it may be the throwout bearing. Its making the high pitch whine noise when I not on the clutch. Could have solved two problems with one replacement part!

My dad said something how you have to remove a bolt to check the fluid. I cant have him do it cause hes too old and his back is bad. And a little too chubby tp fit under my lowered truck! Haha...

driver side of the tranny, there is a plug in which you add fluid, take a wire brush & knock the crud off of it, then take a compressor & hit it with some air to get rid of any other stuff that could fall in, pull the plug, with the truck on level ground it should be @ a fingertip below the bottom edge of the plug hole. the linkage on the manuals are all internal. with a high pitched
whining noise when your not on the clutch is sounds like either the throw out bearing, or pilot bearing.......syncros wouldn't do that unless the tranny was totaly empty of fluid.

or you could always take the bolts off the shifter and look down in it thats what i did, im getting fat and lazy so taking 3 bolts out compared to laying on dirty ground getting fluid on me.

There should be 3 bolts if you take the boot of your shifter off holding the shifter on take those off and pull the shifter out and you can tell if its low or not

it's just the syncros bro.

it's an old truck and 2nd and 3rd gears are the most roughly shifted into gears typically

from now on just double clutch once in awhile if it will not go in, syncros are just that, syncronizers. if they wear out, it'll be hard for you to shift into the gears, but not impossible.

and try not to shift down into second when you are going faster than 30mph. 3rd @ 40mph. both speeds should jump the rpms no more than 3000

The whining noise is my throwout bearing. I figured that out. But, I was just merely saying before I wish these problems were just from one part. That way my problems are solved...

I think taking the shifter off sounds better. Haha. My question is, if its low or not, I will know, right? It should be self explanitory?

BTW, That memorial picture is awesome! Everyone drive their truck like that for a memorial? Wish I could have been apart of that.

So Mark, if my syncros goes out, will I still be able to shift at all? And the only time I shift into 2nd is when it will let me. I don't force it into 2nd. When I slow down enough, it will go in. I just hold it there until it goes in. I wonder if this would like grind down the syncros?

I rapp out in 2nd gear doing 20mph. 3rd gear peaks at 35 for me. and 4th at 50. Each time I shift, its at about 2500-3000 rpm.

Today, I shift into 2nd and 3rd, let out the clutch and ended up going nowhere. Turns out, I push it in just a little further, after the point where I would feel the resistance and it would go in. But when I first put in gear it certainly does feel like I'm in gear. Its weird. So does anyone know when I need to replace the tranny? Like specifically a mileage or just wait until you cant get it in gear anymore?

If I'm going say 100km/h, I can down shift into 4th (3500rpm @ 100km/h) and 3rd (5000 @ 100km/h), but not 2nd or 1st. If I slow down to around 60km/h I can downshift into 2nd but I'm revving high at around 4500, If I slow down further to around 10km/h, I can go into first. Now if I'm speeding up, I can go into any gear at any time, I just wont move anywhere very fast in higher gears.

I don't see the problem in this, the truck has always done this since we bought it in 92.... I shift at 3k - 3.5k and down shift when it lets me.

check your fluid this way

get under the truck on the driverside beside the tranny and you will see a big hex bolt. like 23mm i think.

that is there to let you know when it is full, when you fll the tranny with fluid, once it starts overflowing there then that means it is full. so unscrew that hex bolt and just feel around in there and if you feel oil, then mostlikely it's fine
