I want to get a better alternator for my truck. I called an alternator repair shop today and they said it would cost about 50-60 bucks for a stock rebuild, so i asked how much to beef it up? the dude asked how much i wanted to spend. haha. he said that a good beefed up alternator runs anywhere from 200 up to 500 bucks. is this right? where can i go to get a beefier alternator for this truck?

i have heard ofpeople using the gm one wire ones. they are 100amp i think. they say you need to mod the bracket tho. i plan on doing this on down the road. -bf

last i checked a place here in town would rebuild & wind one of our factory units for about $120........this was going from the stock 50-55 amp output to 90 amp.

i know the one wire units came on the early 80's gm trucks.....

ok see i talked to an alternator rebuild shop here and they told me they could rebuild it for 50 or 60 bucks which i thought was cool. but when i asked him to beef it up a little he said he didn't think he could. 90 amps would be plenty for what i want. i wonder what all they have to do to the internals?

The FC RX-7s alternators use the same case and are 70amp. The plugs might be different though.

a little extra copper on the windings & upgrade the brushes....not that much...it's just time consuming & the cost of the parts & extra copper.

Place call wrangler makes an alternator for our trucks. They're high output and mine is 190 amps at idle. I have my soundsystem and it draws 135 amps alone. Plus future bag setup and amps needed for engine to run good. So depending on what you want done, plan on spending some good money for one. I got mine for $400 and also the cost for a belt 2 inches longer. Had to upgrade to 0ga wires also. Installed it myself and had no problems!
