I'm looking to buy a 90 b2200 with no motor in it. What years will bolt to the 5 spd trans and plug in? Wondering if a 86 b2000 motor will work? Also I am unsure if it's FI, how do I tell? I like in North Dakota, where is the pump at. I'm not familiar to mazdas and need help.!!!! I am going to buy the truck in 2 days.....

why are you getting the truck first off? just to get around or build up to show and have a good time? if it is a project then personally i would drop a v8 in her. but if you want good gas mileage and a little hp i would get a carb'd 2.2l with a 2.0l head. i say the 2.0l head for the sole purpose of the mechanical lifters. i have gone through many headaches with the hydraulic lifters and am getting ready to drop a 2.0l head on mine.

are you looking for the fuel pump? if so, it should be electric and on top of the gas tank. if you get an engine with a mechanical fuel pump on it, it will be on the passenger side behind/below the intake.

hope this helps a little. and welcome to the scene.

I will build it to drive so the 2.2 should be fine. I'm just unsure which year 2.2 will work. From what you say any year motor will work? Now that you say where the pump should be I really believe it's carbed. Does the head swap help with power or just reliability?

the 86-93 2.2l are all the same block. i am not sure it the head swap will help with power but will def. help in reliablity and headaches. i really don't think it matters where the pump is to determine whether it is carb'd of injected. but not sure. i just personally love the carb'd eng. because you can install a flame thrower, a kick a$$ weber carb, and they are easy to work on and troubleshoot.

Also what about trannys? The one that was in it is fine but I am curious if any of the motors will bolt to it? Does anyone know if I should be leary about a rebuilt 2.2 motor? I found one at a salvage yard for a good price....

find out how long ago it was rebuilt, you may need to go back through it if it has set up for too long. if it has set up for a year or more i would go back through it and replace the rings and rehone (spelling) it. what is the good price, if you don't mind me asking? you can do a basic rebuild fairly cheap. but i can tell you now make sure you get all of the externals. i bought my truck for about 150 bucks thinking all it need was a rebuilt eng. and i later found out that they stole all kinds of stuff off of it. like the fuel pump, sending unit, and distributor. it is a lot easier and cheaper if everything is there.

hopefully nytrdr24 will read this, that dude can tell you exactly what to do. he has done a ton of research on these engines.

Ok there was no 2.2 motors in 86 There was some in 87 but close to the end of the year. The 2.0 motor will bolt up if you use the 2.0 motor mounts. The heads on the 2.2 and the 2.0 are the same head no differnce as for the hydraulic lifters or mechanical you can use ether on the 2.2 blocks but only the mechanical on the 2.0 blocks. the blocks are what changed not the heads. The hydraulic lifters work great, when they work. they tend to get noise and fail not all the time but sometimes. If you get some that work then you don't have to mess with them were as the mechanical you have to adjust. So I would say more reliability but being able to fine tune them might help in power.

Now that that is said and done with. The trannys from 86-93 are the same So any motor from 86-93 will bolt up mines the B2600 or B2600i nothing motor will swap to a B2200 If you have a 2200 and the wire harness for it then try and stick with a B2200 intake. there are some minor changes in the harness that might give you some hell. If you Grab a B2000 motor then grab the harness for it as well and the computer (if you wont to call it that lol). Now if your state does not have very strict emmsions then you can get rid of the stock carb and emmsions crap and go with a Weber carb and header. Now that will give you some much needed power and better gas.

Anthor choice you have is a kia motor it will also bolt right up to your stock tranny and give you lots of power plus if you grab the wire harness and computer you can go EFI plus the kia motors have lots more Hp.

Then you got the V8 or V6 swap but that will mean a new drive shaft.

The motor only had 30K on it. Plus it is a 2.2 so the $350 for it is worth every penny.

well maz, pont covered it pretty well, but thanks for the nod!

86-87 b2000 fe block 1998 cc 86mm bore 86 mm stroke
87-93 b2200 f2 engine 2184 cc 86 mm bore 94 mm stroke
late 89-93 optional fuelie engine, pump is elect. & in the tank.

the b2k & b22k heads are both 8v, the b2k has the mech lifters, & the b22k has the hyd ones, so the rocker arm assembly is different, plus the b2k's windage tray is different because of the rocker arm assembly.
the hyd's are good if engine is properly maintainced & you don't rev the engine past 4k, otherwise you'll take a chance @ floating one.

on either engine block you can use a 12v head from a 626 from the same years, but will need the harness from the car, if you go this far, get one from a 626 gt which has a turbo...running stock boost you'll get @ 125 hp....if you do some tweeking a bunch more.

also like pont said, the block from a kia sportage is the same as the f2 block, but the head is a dual over head 16v, it puts out 145 hp stock.

i think the mani & turbo setup fro the 626 gt will bolt up to any of the heads, won't swear to it tho.

tranny is also used in the 86-88 rx-7 gxl, less the bellhousing & 5th gear, it is a little taller, which will allow for more top speed.
