I just finished installing my new engine and i can't get it to start, does anyone know the correct firing order and the right way to set the timing. I have all new ignition stuff,[new plugs, plug wires, distributor, coil, & battery] I have been trying to start it for two days but no go so far.

U did not say what kind of engine. If it is a Mazda 2200,it should be set at 6 degrees BTDC re the timing.Do you have spark,do u have fuel to the carb or injectors?Does it fire at all or just turn over with no fire?BJ

i'd say its an 84 by his sig bj, so it would either be an ma, or fe block......check on mazdatrucking.com, it should have the timing specs on it.....also, you gotta have 3 things for it to run, fuel, air, & spark.....check to see if you are getting fuel to the carb, & spark @ the plug.....if so are the plugs gapped correctly, if so i'd check to make sure it is in time.....good luck with getting it running!

It is a 84 2.0,Ive primed the carb and I have also sprayed startng fluid in the carburator, I pulled a plug out and watched it spark while someone else turned the key, and i have also put a very little bit of gas in each spark plug hole and still nothing. I think maybe I have the plug wires in the wrong order or I have the distributor in wrong. I thought even if it is cross wired it should still at least try to start but I dont know.

make sure the # 1 cyl is at tdc & pull the dizzy cap & make sure the rotor button is pointing to where the #1 plug wire is....then check the firing order to make sure you don't have your plug wires crossed. your getting spark & fuel, it ought to at least try to fire.....

Did u replace the entire dist (pull the old one out completely) or just replace the cap? There is a vent plug on the top of the dist cap and it should be at the 11 oclock position if the cap is on correctly and I really think there is only one way for the cap to go on.Mazda plug wires are marked to show u which plug they go to-did u use factory wires? If my memory has not failed me completely firing order is 1-4-3-2 on 2200's and I assume it is the same on 2000's.I will check manual tonite and let u know if I am wrong or someone else like NYTRD will know it.Are all your ground wires hooked up and tight, there are four in the engine bay-battery ,coil, block and one off the back of the valve cover, check them.BJ

I pulled the dist. when i rebuilt the motor I have replaced the cap rotor plug wires coil and plugs. I also took all the grounds off sanded them and reattached, but i didn't have one off the valve cover, I just had one on the coil and the battery cable goes to the motor mount and then from the motor mount to the frame. the vent cap is at the 11 oclock how do the plug wires go on the cap starting at the terminal just to the right of the vent and going around clockwise. I really appreciate you guys help

here is a link,

i know you have the 84 which is a b2k, but is should be similar to this for the b2200...... hope this helps. only other thing i could think of is did you hook up the new coil exactly how the old one was....

If my wires go on the dist. like the one in that pic then i have mine wired up completly ass backwards. I am going to try pulling the dist. back out bumping the motor till #1 is tdc reinstalling it and wiring it up like that pic and see what happens
