Well, I just replaced mine today. Actually got it in the tank and whatnot. I dunno if it is actually the solution to my problem because my bad one works after the tank is empty for so long. So when I go to top it off, I'll know. Funny thing is, I was screwed out of a screw on my new unit so I had to use an old one! And I was lucky to get the screw off the old one! Two of them were rusted out...
I took my bad unit apart and compared the two. The new one, you can feel the contact rub against all the copper wires. The old one, 3/4 empty and you start feeling the ridges. Another thing I noticed is that where it rubbed at, it had a black gummy residue. If I were anyone, clean that first and if you have good contact, try it out first. Because, I bet if I cleaned mine and had a good contact, it would have been good still!
I wonder, do you think this would qualify as a tech. write-up to replace the unit?
BTW: What is the float you speak of?
