ok i messed with it untill i figured it out on my nikki there is a screw on the passenger side base of the carb with a spring around it this makes it rich or lean screw it in to lean it out - screw it out to make it rich, i srewed it all the way in and then backed it out 1 and 1/4 and no more sputtering no more black smoke. there is also anouther screw on the back of the carb facing the pass. side screw it in to idle it down back it out to idle up. the big knob on the back that says rich and lean adjusts the choke. now it idles great doesnt die and doesn't smoke. hope this helps someone

make sure you're not running too lean, it's bad.. running rich is better than lean.

i just leaned it enough to get rid of the black smoke

Hook up a digital meter on the O2 sensor connector by backprobing the plug.
Make sure it's crossing the 0.5 volts every now and then, meaning it does not stay below 0.5 volts all the time.
In mid throttle to WOT, it should be around 0.6-0.8 volts (on the rich side).
Much better if you have a dwell meter to check operation of the carb mixture solenoid.
