I went to replace my gaskets today. I used a sheet of make-a-gasket stuff. I cut it out just the same way as the gaskets from weber. Everything went fine. I did'nt mess with anything except the plates and gaskets to replace them.

I get everything done, and ready to crank over. I get it to crank and this REALLY loud high pitch whine is coming from the carb. Then it dies!

I went back through and trimmed the gaskets, because I thought it may have been from the air vibrating the gaskets. Still does'nt work! I did'nt alter anything whatsoever!

I need help ASAP man! I need to be able to drive! The only thing I can speculate, is that there is a vacuum leak through the gaskets and somehow it makes it whistle... Hence why it dies also...

My dad thinks its coming from inside the carb.

So I recut all the gaskets and doubled them up.... IT STILL WHISTLES, WHINES, etc. What the hell is wrong!?

Vacuum leak from somewhere. On the back side of the carb there is a small vacuum line that comes off the intake.Very hard to see.If u moved the carb around at all u may have disconnected this little line (or like mine it may have been brittle and broke). Check that one 1st.Doubling the gaskets just gives more opportunity for a leak.Did u use a gasket sealer?BJ

Carburetors whistle esp. when the choke plate is closed.

As bj said, check for open vacuum taps in the carb and intake manifold. Plug them all up.

Don't use silicon sealant if you can. Use Hylomar non-hardening gasket sealant.

I did not use any gasket sealer. Thats the whole reason why I replaced my gaskets. I had a vacuum leak from the gaskets because the sealant was eaten away and never even sealed it! It was just a smooth mess...

I will check the vacuum lines and plugs everywhere again, but I HIGHLY doubt anything has been disturbed... And actually I failed to mention that the only gasket I doubled was the base gasket on the intake manifold.

Are you talking about the butterflies being closed?

I actually don't want to use ANY sealant, lol. It caused me big problems, like this! I got it to run yesterday, and it sounds like its coming from the inside the carb. Not anywhere else. But of course its so friggin' loud, I can't really pin-point it!

I talked to my TA at my school and he says I may need to take it apart to see if there is something stuck, etc. I also called the company that I bought the carb from and they said I should try and reset all the tuning so I can troubleshoot it if it is a vacuum leak.

I'm gonna go try these things now, and I'll let you guys know how it goes... I fear I may have to call Weber...

Okay guys... WOW! Whatta day! I'm pretty angry about this all. But atleast its over!

So, it turns out, really, the adator plates are warped. They must be to a certain degree atleast... I went and got some High-tack gasket sealant from Permatex.

Sealed those babies up and doubled the gaskets... NO MORE WHISTLE!!!! WAHOO! I'm glad it was that simple, but man, I can't believe it took this long to notice!

89b2200, sorry about disagreeing with you about the sealant!

From now on, I figure someone is more than likely to search up about the same problem. So I say SEAL them EVERYTIME!

Well, my mechanic who rebuilt my engine has a shop, so if I really wanted to, he could mil it down for me.

But ya, a home remedy would be to use sand paper... This new sealant I used does'nt dissolve to petroleum. The stuff does'nt even harden! The only thing that can remove it now, is acetone.

No, it will do fine now, it should last me a long time! And in fact, now my problem herein lies with the cheap fuel I must have bought because of my LEAN as hell mixture and a guy said I'm leaking fuel through my throttle linkage... WEIRD!
