We had a big disscusion about this in school. There is really no way to test the fan clutch. But one thing you can do is get the truck up to operating temp and put a peice of paper on the radiator.I the paper sticks to the radiator then i waoul consider it fine but if it doesent....time for a new fan clutch. This only works when the fan clutch is engaged. This is how i tested it on my blazer when i recharged my a/c system

if your truck sits idling for a while and overheats it's most likely the clutch on the fan. to check to see, when it over heats pop the hood and see if the fan will spin.

If the fan spins it's no good it should lock up when it starts to overheat

Tweaker the only way I know to test the thing is to listen and look at it.I am sure u know that the thing works off a bimetal spring. When the truck is cold, the spring contracts and the fan turns slower. As the truck warms up,the spring expands and the clutch engages causing the fan to turn more. When u first start the truck in the am the clutch catches briefly until enough air flows over the spring to cause either expansion or contraction.U usually hear a loud roar from the fan when this happens. The fan should be fairly easy to turn with a cold engine and hard to turn when warm.If u think urs is bad,I have a working one from my 2200 u may have.Same deal as the bumper.come get it and its urs.BJ

I changed the fan clutch on my 91 carbed a couple years back, and I noticed that when you first start the truck from a cold state, the fan will spin at full speed (you will be able to hear this) then after a minute or so, the clutch will disengage, and you'll notice the truck is alot quieter. If yours doesn't do that, I would think it's time to replace it. It actually wasn't very expensive to get one straight from Canadian Tire back when I changed mine.

I'm in Arizona, and my fan clutch has needed replacement about every six years. I feel it first as warmer AC vent temperatures as opposed to engine overheating. The usual test is to get the engine hot, turn OFF the engine, then spin the fan by hand; there should be definite resistance, less than half a turn of spin. Replacement is straightforward, 10 mm head nuts to remove with the fan attached, then unbolt the fan from it.

Thats about right when hot-1/2 turn.Should be easier to turn when cold.As I said next time I am at my sis' I will bring my fan clutch and will give u her address.U can drop by and get it.I know it is ok cause it was working fine when I went to electric. How does the bumper look by the way?BJ
