Heres the deal my mazda was gave to me by a friend after like his 5th dui it sat for 4 years outside ran great when we parked it. We go and get the truck with a rollback bring it to my house after changing all the fluids, draining and cleaning the gas tank/sending unit andfuel pump blew out all the gas lines, put new plugs wires dist. cap and rotor button belts filled her with gas and a can of carb and choke cleaner she still wont run it will start and run for about 5 seconds and quit now i can pat the gas really fast and it will start if i continue to pat the gas. As the engine gets warmer it seems to run a little better not having to hit the gas pedal as much and.... hte things ive checked so far is vacum leaks (i know mazdas with stock carbslol) i checked the timing and pulled out all the plugs cleaned and put back in still no good anybody have any ideas on what it could be??

Did u change the fuel filter? It is located on the frame rail, passenger side close to the tank.It may be full of debris. Also, take the fuel line lose from the carb, disconnect the coil wire so the truck will not fire and turn the truck over a time or two to see if u r getting plenty of fuel to the carb.BJ

Bump. One other thought. When the truck is cold, take the top off the aircleaner so u can see down the carb throat.Turn the switch ON depress the accel pedal down about 1/2 way ,dont start the truck but get out and look down the carb throat. The choke should be in the closed position. If not ur choke isnt working and that will cause major cold start problems.Spray some WD-40 or carb cleaner on the butterfly and see if u can loosen it up.BJ

Yep, sounds like the carb! I'm thinking its your choke, too. But it may also be another nightmare somewhere in that carb... I just don't get how it ran fine before you guys messed with it... Make sure you have your choke wire hooked up correctly so it opens.

But from what all you just told us, its from something you've done. MAKE sure you have your timing right, and your dist, and rotor are in the RIGHT spot. Does it smoke at all when you hit the gas?

Other than timing, it sounds like it may be a fuel problem if all else fails... But thats the last thing I would think of since you are able to make it run...

mine does the same thing, choke doesnt work. you just have to stay with it until it gets warm. time for a weber lol.

I think your right i dont think my choke is working at all. I actually got it to idle a while ago after it got warmed up but it still ran like crap. guess its time for a weber or a engine swap lol
