Hi I am actually Zac's brother. I feel its time for me to step in and help him out as he has hit a wall. I have read through all of Mazda Tweakers tips. And I will start to go through them. I understand the solenoid and I will check my multimeter and see if it has a dwell setting and go through that test procedure. I also read about the 510 solenoid trick worst comes to worst. Checking the grounds and connections to the computer will be on my list. I appreciate all your help. The choke check might help to as its easy to check. Anyways don't give up on us I have found your information extremely helpful. This truck has caused an unbelievable amount of stress and anxiety amongst our entire family.

About that solenoid the way I understood it was it operated at different voltages which basically caused it to adjust to different positions. From what you are saying it sounds like it is operating normally. Or at least the voltage is showing up right. When I test it with a dwell meter what should it be reading? I tried looking for a timing light to buy and they were all like at least $100 plus. (For a good one) I did not even have to pay to get it timed the shop didn't even charge me for it as they didn't really have to adjust it.

We are still going to be working on this but like my brother said you have been an extremely large help and I couldn't have even gotten nearly this far without your help as well as many others, it is really appreciated.

I don't know where you learned that.

It isn't true. Or correct.

It's a magnetically operated switch. With air jets.

Off or on.

Energized or off.

Dwell (duty cycle) is the amount of ON time the computer grounds the circuit as a percentage of 100 or 90 degrees (360 devided by 4)

What do you think the likelyhood of having 2 bad carburetors is?

What do you think the likelyhood of having a bad computer is, given the fact that your truck is passing idle emissions?

Yet you are exploring the possibility of replacing expensive parts without knowledge that they are in need of replacement. Cmputers and carburetors. Maybe you need to verify vacuum hose routing or do the other tests that I listed and post your results first.

I fixed a 1986 truck in a week, between working full time and other life responsibilites. I had a dwell meter connected to verify circuit operation. You have been dealing with this problem issue for what, months now?

Until you have a meter capable of measuring dwell in hand, I am not giving you anymore information. I have already posted where to hook one up, in the thread that I linked to this one.

ummm, Zac. . .since you apparently didn't have to spend $30.00 after all, you can buy the tools you need to fix your issues for less than that, and have money left over.

Well I attempted to check some of the vacuum systems. It was a little more challenging then I thought but I didn't have a vacuum pump so I was just seeing if I could find anything wrong.

After everything seemed to check out I decided that I would check the wiring on the computer because it is pretty easy to get to and since I didn't have a vacuum pump and couldn't go pick one up tonight I thought I might as well check that for the mean time.

So after checking the computer we ended up finding some problems with a wire and the connector leading into the computer. Fixed those up and used a dwell meter that I borrowed to check that same solenoid (Which we did check the dwell before and it was not varying, when I said voltage we were actually checking the dwell... my mistake.)

So after fixing that wire the dwell for that solenoid was varying.

Brought it in for an etest and it passed with flying colors!

In otherwords its done!

I just wanted to thnk you so much for your help Mazda Tweaker, BJ, and many other. Sorry I might have frustrated you a bit but I really was trying to figure this problem out as best I can.

Thank you everyone!

Now I just get to license it tomorrow and its pretty much done. There are still problems to work out (broken hood release cable, power steering issues etc.) but its drivable now!

congrats dude.U can now assume the role of Mr. Diagnostician on this site and the Hocster will fade off into the sunset and leave the fixin to u and the Tweakster.Lol.BJ

Congrats on the e-test win!!!! With any luck the rest of the little issues with your truck will be a no brainer.

Now BJ, don't be leavin just yet.........

Piano wire or bike /motorcycle cable will work for a hood release if u cant find the real deal.BJ
