gas gauge not working

So my gas gauge quit on me yesterday.

Looking in the Haynes manual,it says the fuel gauge unit is inside the gas tank, meaning I have to drop the tank.

First,is there any way, like a ground or something onto pof the tank that may have gone bad that I can replace? Secondly, will the sending unit (entire assembly) from an FI 2.6 ext cab work with a carb 2.2 ext cab?

This is just an annoying little problem. I just got the truck ready to go for safety and the gas gauge quits, and my temp gauge doesn't work either.

Any help on this one guys? Thanks.

I would try and clean the connections on the sending unit, they are prone to corrosion! If that doesn't work then I guess you might dig deeper....

I had that problem and cleaned it, problem solved!

By "on the sending unit" you mean just the top of the tank? I don't want to drop the tank if I don't have to.

You don't have to drop the tank. You can remove or slide the bed backwards. Someone said you can loosen driver side bolts and remove passenger side, then jack up the pasenger side of the bed. I'm waiting for someone to cut an access panel in the bed for this. They also said to beware of the screws for it being rusted. Personally, I use the trip odometer.

lmao,I think it;s more effort to move or remove the bed than to just drop the gas tank.

And yeah,I had to go by the trip meter in my old Isuzu, but I have oversized tires on my truck and my odometer isn't accurate,so I can;t count solely on that. Maybe I should just carry a jerry can with me and drive it till it craps out and see how many KM I get to a tank, then fill it with the jerry can.

I have a rotten bed anyways,I'm sure there's a big enough hole in it somewhere to use as an access panel. LOL

I think the FI 2600i truck pump puts out about 15psi.The carbed 2200 pump puts out 3-5 psi so I dont think the 2600 unit will work without a regulator. The gauges dont work well after time because they work on elec.resistance and the slider they move up and down on gets gunked up and they start malfunctioning.Remove the pump, clean the contacts and clean the slider and that may fix the issue for awhile.BJ

bumpety-humpety.Clean the top of ur tank off real well before u take the pump out.Dont want a lot of gravel and sh-- getting in your tank.BJ

you can loosen the bed bolts and the filler neck, then just tilt the bed away from the cab like a dump truck and put a piece of 2x4 wood or something to prop it up. a new sending unit from a parts store is only around $50. i just bought one like 5 months ago and it fixed my problem. i wouldnt go through all the trouble to put in another used one when it may go out just like the old one did.
