static drop question

Hey guys. I'm expecting my tax return in the mail any day now giving me the chance to drop my truck. Now,I can only do a static drop at this point because I can't afford to bag it,can't take the truck off the road for the time it needs to do all the work etc to bag it,so that'll probably be a next year project....

Anyways back on track here. I want to drop my truck pretty low,but I still need to drive it daily,so I don't want to get hung up on speedbumps or curbs,driveways etc,because I don't want to smash my diff off something,or hit any of my suspension components and rip something off.

Now,I was just out on my level driveway with a tape measure and recorded the heights from the truck to the ground at different points. Hopefully with these dimensions,you guys can help me determine what size drop would be 'practical'.

Bottom of the front bumper to ground - 13"
Bottom of bed (below rear licence plate) to ground - 20"
Frame rail infront of rear wheel before it bends up over the axle to ground - 10", and 9" in the front,behind the front wheel,basically about inline with the side view mirror.
Rear differential to ground - 8" at the lowest point
Very bottom of the leaf springs to ground - approx 7.5"
Top of tire to bottom of fender lip (rear) - 7"
Top of tire to bottom of fender lip (front) - about 3.5"

I was thinking I could do a 6" drop,but then that only leaves me with ground clearance as little as an inch and a half in some spots. Most like a 4" drop would be pretty big,but still give me enough to usually not run into problems. Keep in mind,I just have a 2WD B2200 and I run 14" rims with 205/75/14 tires and do not plan on upgrading the wheels any time soon.

Anything below two inches gets into ride quality.Why not two inch dropped spindles for front, two inch blocks for rear?You will have a noticeably lower truck and it will still ride and handle reasonably well.If ride isnt issue ,I guess go as low as you and your pocketbook can stand. BJ

I find the ride quality of the truck extremely shitty as it is,so if it's not going to get any better,I could care less if it gets any worse. It's so bad I can drive down a smooth road and barely be able to drink a cup of coffee without spilling it all over the place. A friend of mine has a '98 GMC 1500 with a 3/4 drop and 20" wheels and it's ride is a little rougher due to the low profile 275/35/20 tires,but it's still compliant.

I was just planning on doing a cheap static drop with drop shocks,cranked torsions and blocks and be done with it till I decide to bag it if I keep the truck for the long run.

Sounds like a plan. Please be careful working on the torsion bars, they can do some serious damage. BJ

3" blocks and crank the torsions down to a suitable "rake" you like. With mine down 3" in the rear, probably 4 in front, and removed front bump stops I still had a decent ride as long as I didn't hit potholes, and I didn't have much probs with most driveways and some of the biggest speedbumps.

When I went lower than that, the ride sucked cuz I only had about 1" travel in the front, and about 1.5" in the rear before hitting metal to metal...you don't want that.

in the back pull one leaf and 2 inch blocks that will cost you around 20 to 30 bucks and time front crank the torsion bars till it gets to the level you wont i would say about 2 inchs there as well just rember how meny times you trun it and turn it the same on the other side

Here's Mine with a Static drop...Cranked down Torsions (not completely, so i still have suspension travel, and 4" blocks in the rear"...Let me know what you think...

yeah man,that's exactly the look I want. You still have tons of clearance under the truck too,but you are also running 17s. HotDawg,I saw pics of your truck with the drop and that's a good height,something what I'd like to do. What size wheels were you running? 15s?
