Gusset them down. If you gusset them up there is no point.

thats kinda what I was thinking but most of the pictures I've looked at have them up but it just goes to the shock tower which there isnt much left now.

Exactly. All it will do is make that shock tower bend with the upper bracket. Which wouldn't be any fun. Just use some good judgement on size and check to make sure you get the clearence you want.

Yea deff. gusset them down theres a hole in the stock mazda frame right behind where the bag will go if u gusset it down it will help keep the frame strong so the frame wont wanna rip out. If u gusset them up it puts all the weight on the frame right where the hole is and the frame tends to tear apart when airing up...

so you guys put the gussets on TOP of the bag plate or on the bottom?

on the bottom, they do no good on the top welded to the shock tower...
