I am going to be replacing my shocks, but not in the factory location. my intentions are to use the stock bottom location on the driver side, and reversing the passnger side. i will be mounting the tops on my notches, by welding bolts to the frame, and securing. what i would like to know is what is the proper way to figure mounting location?

is the truck bagged? if so set it down push in the shock and mark where you need to and weld... but i would'nt ues bolt to weld because the heat will weaken them and thay will break off just my thoughts on da deal.

no, not bagged. i figure either structural bolts, or grade 8

Erm.. well if you are not asking about how to find the size of shock, then you must be asking about an efficient way to mount the shock?

I would say that any location is good as long as the shock can travel within its travel. The catch is to mount it as perpindicular as you can so you will get the most out of the shock.

Chevy 2wd C10's used a bolt in stud in the front shocks up to 1987 or so. You can buy the studs at autoparts stores pretty cheap. You can weld the stud into a piece of 1 1/4in tubing then weld the tube to your notch. Works very well and the nuts don't come loose. As far as where to mount them, give them some angle because it will help the rear ride a little softer. If you mount them straight up and down you have a 1 to 1 ratio on the shock and it make the truck ride really stiff. Mounting them about mid travel works pretty good. Try to keep about the same angle as the stock ones, just mounted a little higher. Hope this helps. Here are some pics of my lower shock mounts useing the same method.
