I am gonna be pulling my axle shafts to replace the seals and my third member started leaking from the bottom where it mounts to the housing. Im thinking about using high temp silicone to seal it back up after i take it out. Is this the best way or is there some kind of gasket made to do this?

please don't use silicone on anything thats leaking... its a waste of time and money and god does it look hacky... not only that im sure it won't work well and if it does it wont for long.... get you some gasket material and make your own... most automotive stores carry it....

Eh, no way, my diff. never had agasket to the diff. housing. I don't see why there would be a problem.

I pulled mine to inspect it and thats all there was. Actually, there seemed to be very little sealant at all on it. No gasket either.

I used BLACK RTV sealant after cleaning the two mating surfaces of gunk. Apply it fairly thin to the diff. housing and circle the holes. Put some sealant on the bolts as well so it will seal. When you tighten it down, it will compress and should have a little bit squeeze out the sides.

It should do VERY well. I know it will take a jack hammer to get it off now!
