i'm running a stock replacement mazda KYB shock on the front of mine. its mounted half way up the a arm, so the added stiffness helps
for the rear it depends how much travel you have and how much room you have to work with. you shouldn't run your shocks at too extreme of an angle, anything over about 30 degrees it tends to become less useful. you'll see shocks mounted horizontally at minitruck shows, i can only imagine how well it doesn't work. if you're getting over like 7 or 8 inches you'll likely want to mount the shock to the bar also, just remember you'll get the best performance out of the shock if its mounted closest to the axle. you can kind of compensate for the distance away fromt the axle by getting a stiffer shock.
check out a monroe or bilstein catalog and see what works, or call them and see if they can help you out.
