I know this thread is old, but I figured I would throw out an idea I used on my old Mazda... I ran across it while searching for a thread on shaving the key holes in the doors.
Get one of those magnetic stereo cabinet latches. The ones that hold the doors shut, but when you press on the door it clicks and pops out far enough to grab the edge and open it. Shave the key hole, mount the magnetic latch so the gas door sits flush with the body when closed. Then just push on the door and it pops out enough to open it. The magnet hold it closed pretty well also. Nice, clean, and a simple install.
