I am curious about walkthroughs. I was wondering if anyone has any pics of one or if they are a good idea, how do people add the support back. I think it would be cool to kind of have a mazda suv with a removable top and be able to take advantage of the back seat but putting a full bench back there. would it be better to make it a unibody at the same time to seal the space between the floor and the bed?

any insight on this type of mod would be appreciated.

how ugly what was, a canopy??
where I live it gets nice and warm in the summer, perfect for a conv. but it gets really cold in the winter, used to have a pathfinder and loved the suv, but didnt like the truck itself, missed my mazdas. I dont mind canopies except for the huge ones that really look out of place, I like the smooth ones that match the lines of the truck.

I like canopies, as long as they are not huge, I had a canopy on my old mazda 4x4, it looked like an oldman truck, but it was a highboy canopy. the canopy that came on my 2wd was falling apart, I like smooth fiberglass ones, but I wish I could have an oldschool mazda too. I want a nice sound system but need room for friends, they all like me to drive.

your talking alot of work if you want a unibody, ive been pondering the idea for a year or so now. i want to do it very badly, but a few factors come into play.

I have talked with a few of hotrod builders and they told me what I would have to do to make sure it was stiff. The bed would only have to move about an inch or 2 foreward to butt it up to the cab and weld everything together, add supports to the inside, which you would need to do to make sure your cab doesnt fall from cutting the whole backside off. adding an extra crossmember to the frame, which is needed to stiffen the frame but could also be used for the 4link mount, an X not a I style crossmember.

I just cant think of a way to do a good walkthrough without unibodying(if thats a word) the truck. I would want to modify the canopy also so it had no front on it, make a custom seal so it wont leak and stuff, kind of like a bronco.

i just really want to see what other have done before me so I can see what I am up against, cuase the more I think about it, the more I want to go do it.

thanks,
Mike

EDIT
well I just looked at some pictures of a unibodied mazda, and it looks good, but not really want I want, I think I will still unibody the truck but leave the gap on the outside to give it the look of a truck, so on the inside it would looks all smooth and uniform, but the outside would look like a truck with the bed rather then a ranchero looking thing.

Valiant - have had a walkthru for probably 10 years now. Changed the interior a few times but basic construction is probably similar to what you were wanting.
