I have been wondering if its possible/wise to install a set of legit hids into the 01-05 Ranger headlights? Why I'm asking is one of my friends owns and is into his BMW's, and he said that you can't install HID's into the stock housing because the heat from the bulbs will warmup and bloat the lenses, if not nearly melt the whole housing. I don't see how this could be possible since most stock lights are 60/55w, and the HID is supposed to be 35w. Any input would be greatly appreciated, I just don't want to trash a set of housings.

they wont melt any part of the lenses. Putting HID into a housing not designed or modified for them is a bad idea. The stock housings dont control where all the light goes. You would be blinding on coming traffice pretty severly at night. You would either need to retro fit in some projectors or some how cut off the stray beams that are put out from the HIDs. Ive seen this done by pulling the clear lense off and turning the headlights on facing a wall or something like that. Then find out what part of the housing is reflecting light that is going up higher than it should.

There is a law in colorado about HIDs. If the vehicle didnt come with them OEM then they are illegal and the ticket is expensive and 4 points on your license. Its considered unsafe for other motorists.

YOu can swap in any HID System as long as it has an upgraded wiring harness, ballast, and so on!

I don't think you will melt the housing at all, you would melt the wiring harness before the housing!

Just my 2 pennies!

Get ahold of Gravity...he knows quite a bit on this subject!

Yes you can do HID's in any housing's and in most cases the stock wiring will suffice...

But like mentioned above the light pattern, or spread of light will be far from efficient and in most cases although where the light hits the road is better lit, less light actually hits the road....most of the light is scattereed into glare and is all but useless.

Not to mention this glare can make it hard to see if not totally impossible to see in adverse weather conditions.

That said I did an 02 DAKTOTA with clear HL lenses and 8000 K HID's and it worked really well, but I have done a 95 civic, and it sucked monkey balls and was not worth the 300 bucks.

If you really want HID get the projectors on ebay from a late model factory equiped car and use the whole projector housing inside of a clear lensed headlight.

I personally have done this once, it is a LOT of work, but well worth it as the light has the proper vertical cutoff pattern, and throws tonnes of light on the road where it belongs, and it is DOT stamped so it is KINDA legal.
