anyone have a how to on doing this? i want to weld the tailgate shut on the 83 and need to know what to do. thanks.

grant doesn't make a skin for the 83s and 84s. i would if they did.

but i want the mazda logo and i want to keep my rear bumper. so if anyone can help me out with what i need to do to weld my tailgate shut i would appreciate it.

get some 3/16" or 1/8" which ever fits best to fill in the gaps

you need about 3/16" bar stock to fill the gap. weld it all up along the sides and then once that is done, brace the upper corners into the bedrails at a 45 degree angle. also do the same at the bottom. this will prevent any cracking when the bed flexes

Im sure grant would sell the skin minus the rollpan, and as for the logo you would be better off to use a skin and use the stock letters welded into that skin. To weld a tailgate in you have to weld filler metal on both side, and there is no way to seal the back side from the elements.
