Well right now my mazdas going through some changes and I have been looking at the paint and thinking of changing it as well , right nows it a real nice Metalic Blue (Medium blue) but Im thinking about laying down 2 coats of base clear(Incase I get some unexpected runs and wont have to worry about wet sanding in my base paint) then lay some pearl down. Has any one used pearl in a clear coat before? thats what Im planning on doing about 2 coats of pearl.Im looking for any advice cuz I have never used pearl in a clear before , and also what color pearl would look good with the blue?

Cheers guys

Check some of your local body shops, chances are they have messed with pearls in every way, shape and form. Myself, I'm kinda fond of pearl white, that's just my oppinion though

dayto.. you have to be really realllly careful with laying clear with pearl in it over any base color. reason being, you can actually create more of a foggy or hazy effect over your base. that's bad. kinda like creamy instead of clear.

i would suggest you go to your local auto parts place where they mix paint and look through some of their books. they should also have some custom or 'hot rod' colors. these will be similar to the well known house of kolor type ones. be prepared, they won't be cheap.

i usually suggest to guys to find a color you like on another car or truck you've seen on the road and go from there. most shops should be helpful in tweaking a factory mix.. I do for my customers. but don't ever lose the mix ratios you changed.. LOL. actually, of the cool colors that are affordable, already exist on some other brand of vehicle, they just look much wilder when sprayed on yours.

Tri stage paint jobs can be kinda tricky sometimes. Just like crash said, It can get a haze if its not done right. If its not spray uniform, it can also get blotchy in spots, or your metalics may sag. There is another system for a tristage. Instead of the pearl coat getting mixed in with your clear coat, it gets mixed in with a clear binder. Its like putting another layer of base on. Its much more user friendly. The advantage with that is, the clear coat has more gloss. If you where to run it, its more forgiving because it can be wet sanded and buffed with out, with out seeing a shade change.

when we painted my mustang i put a bunch of pearl on it and they are right to much is not good. my car is white but with all that pearl in it it made it look a little more off white i don't know how the blue would do, but when i go to a place at night with a lot of neon lights like a sonic it realy turns heads. also i put blue pearl on my white car and it makes all the curves and body lines pop really well, i think you should go with a color thats almost opposite of the blue, but once its on there you have to look at it everyday so don't let anyone talk you into anything you don't like, LOL............some body shops are good at that.
