Based on your description I would lean very strongly to the actual headlight switch assembly under the steering column itself.Could be dirty and or worn out.I would remove the cover very simple four screws (in thought) and blow out with air if you can.I can only imagine the build up of lint,dust on it and sounds like it is grounding out due to poor contact explaining the problem.To remove this assembly requires pulling steering whl 4 screws backside of strg whl and then big nut on wheel.Remove and blow out or use some electrical cleaner( crc makes this) auto zone,advance, but in short could be the electrical side is worn out.Tired is setting in but just a general idea of what is going wrong.Ok
