Yea, I work at a stereo shop. I do all the design and fab of custom installs. My area is more in the upholstry and building of the systems but it doesn't take long to get used to the components and whats good/what works.
Put it to you this way. In my daily driver (an 88 GMC fullsize) that I just got I wanted to put a good but dirt cheap system in it. This is what I run, where I got it, what it cost and if it was new or used.
Clarion DXZ745MP eBay $100 Used
Clarion APX640.2 Sub Amp eBay $85 Used
Clarion APA250 Amp eBay $50 New
Clarion EQH5100 eBay $25 New
MA Audio 1 Farad Digital Cap eBay $15 Used
Audiobahn AVDVD 1T DVD Player eBay $25 New
AudioBahn 7" TFT LCD Monitor Buy And Sell $60 New
Audiobahn 6.5"/4"/Tweeter Component Set Work $320 New
2 Audiobahn 10" DVC Subs Work $120 New
TOTAL $810
So it was $810 USD for a complete audio/video system that flexes the shit outta my roof. Heres a good site to check out products, their prices, specs, and what people think . If you want to keep the cost of the speakers down I would use Audiobahn and as for speakers, always buy new. Save and buy the amps used. Heres some examples of some cheap good amps that are up for auction:
Install of course is extra but I would build the box and wire it yourself and save a few bucks. If you have any questions heres some sights that might help:
