the headliners in mazdas are like most pre 1975 cars, there are metal hangers that run in channels of material under those sew lines you see. To get it out you need to remove all of the trim, pull the back window out(it's glued underneath the window)and glued/tacked down to a strip in the front. If you're careful with pattern and hardware, you can tke it to an upholstery shop and for cheap they'll sew you anew one in whatever you want(tweed, leather, microsuede etc) oh yah, if the glue doesn't want to let up, use a heat gun and/or googone.

look at your headliner. See the sew lines that run across the width of it? Each one of those lines has a round flexible metal rod sewn on the top. To remove it,like 92b22 said, you have to remove your A-pillar trim,rearview/dome light and the back corner trim (what looks like a push pin holding it in is actually a plastic cap for a screw...I found out the hard way,haha...dont ask). Along the front, the headliner is tucked up under the windshield and you just have to pull it out. For the back,it's tucked down into the back window rubber and it's a pain in the ass to get out. Basically once you get the front and back removed, just pull down on the rods in the middle so they pop out of each side and then fold it up so you can get it out through the door. It's quite simple, just a little time consuming when doing it for the first time.

well its 16 degrees out right now so im avoiding going out...so ill just ask yall, are the rods able to be drilled thru or are they round? my buddy was tellin me that in rangers they put small screws thru their headliner rods but thats in a ranger... thanks -bf

they're thin round rods,so drilling won't be an option unless you're some super fantastico fabrimacator. lol
