Installing a new speed-o cable?

Hey Folks,

I have a 1984 B2000 Sundowner with 121k miles. Over all, it's in really good shape. Stock, nothing fancy.

Our speedometer is not working well. It pegs up to 80mph when going 35 - 40 mph. I took the dash apart, and found oil in the speed-o cable, and inside the cluster, contaminating the gears and such. I cleaned it as best I could .. and not it works, sometimes, but is still getting some oil.

I'm hoping it just needs a new/different speed-o cable. Any ideas what else it might be?

Also, can anyone comment on how hard/easy it is to replace a speed-o cable? I have a spare cluster .. but don't want to put it on, and contaminate it if a new speed-o cable will do the trick.

damn, i never saw this post bro, it may not be your cable. it may be the gear in the tranny. fairly easy to pull out and take a look at. or at least they are on most of the vehicles i've worked on.

and a cluster is a lot easier to change out than the cable. i always go the easy route first.

later man, keep us updated on the 84 bro.
