minor electrical mystery

When I removed the bed on my 86 B2000 I cut out the taillight and trailer wiring mess left by the previous owner.

I cut the 86's taillight wiring back to where it's grounded to the frame and rewired using the 87's, wiring which I know worked when I had it on the donot truck.

Everything works fine except for 1 thing (this is where the minor electrical mystery comes in)...

When I use the turn signal arm to turn on the lefthand turn signal, it will go on but not blink on and off. When I use the 4-way flashers switch, the lefthand turn signal will blink on and off.

It's obvious I'm getting power to the turn signal but why won't it blink?

Any suggestions/ideas as to why this is?

Cheers !!

Bad flasher relay?

what he said. when you cut the harness you may have crossed the hot and ground shorting out the relay. i know that happened on my brothers truck and we popped a new one in it and boom he has flashers again. are any of the wires burnt up around the relay because his melted as well.

Are you saying there is a flasher relay for each side? If so, then why are the 4-way flashers still working?

Maybe when it was re-wired the lines coming from the relay got mixed up and your getting a constant 12v. Check the wiring with your wiring diagram.

There might be a seperate relay cause if you notice on your fuse box there is a separate fuse for hazards.

Yup, knew about the bulb being out and and the current draw, having dealt with that kind of situation when bringing the '87 back to life last spring. However, the problem with the '86 was different. I tried everything, including swapping in a new turnsignal socket... nothing worked!!

I tried one last thing... I took the flasher unit from the '87 I've been stripping and pluggged it in, instead of the original one... success, all turnsignals are now operating normally. The original unit obviously had some fault in it.

i think u mean when there's a light out there's too much current running thru, because the current isn't being used by both lights like it should, only one. its just heading straight to ground and it makes the good bulb blink faster because it heats the relay circuit faster

Ya, that's exactly what I meant...

I'm just glad everything works.

Cheers !
