I just picked up another '90 ext. cab that already has 626 bucket seats in it, the only problem is that they are blue. I was just wondering if there is a dye that would work to make these a dark grey or something to match the interior better. The seats are in perfect shape so i don't want to go to the trouble / expense of recovering them, but i don't want a cheap dye job that look like shit and end up rubbing off. Any suggestions?

from the extremely little experience i have had, it usually works well when goin from a light color to a dark color. going dark to light usually poses a problem.

I don't mind them being a darker grey, I just really hate blue interiors or red ones for that matter Yet it seems that's all i end up with

I pulled the seat covers off my seats and tried dying them with that fabric dye called Rit. The dye did not take to the treated fabric. It has a UV treatment sprayed on the material. I pulled a thread out of the material and it did dye the thread not exposed to the UV treatment but left the exposed gay color.

I also looked at the dye at Walmart called Dylon. It states on the back of the package that the dye will not color something with a treatment on it (UV, stain repellent).

Carpet dye is another route to try. A pretreatment exists that is supposed to remove these special fabric treatments so the dye will stick. I called a few local carpet places and they won't sell the pretreament or carpet dye to the public. If I could get my hands on some of that carpet pretreatment and dye I will give it a try.

If you figure something else out please let me know.

Matt

There is a special dye that resto and trim shops use that is made just for what u r describing.I bought some off-color "oh my God" handles for the project car Im building for my granddaughter and used this stuff and they came out perfect.Clean the area, spray a couple of coats of this stuff and they make a type of clear that u spray over it to "fix" the color.I believe it is called SSM or something like that.I will check tonight.60 bucks for three cans of color,1 can of clear.Expensive but worth it.BJ

Duplicolor has some paint that is for vinyl and fabric. It has dye in the paint for fabric. I had to put in new jumpseats in the rear of my taco, I tried that paint and it worked really well. Went from brown to gray and it came out good. I also saw somebody do a carpet with that paint it and it worked real good and hasnt gotten worn off. Its like 5 or 6 bucks a can I think.
