Heater controls broke.

The selector on my girlfriends '86 B2000 broke over the weekend. It is stuck blowing the hot air out of the dash vents. Is there anyway I can make the air permenatly blow out of the defrost vents?

yup your gonna have to get under the dash locate where exactly that cable goes disconnect it and..move the selector it was connected to to go to defrost,,,then jusrt leave it be

Go down into the driver's side footwell by the pedals. Behind the radio bezel,you will see (well,more blindly feel for) the heater core. On the side of the heater core facing the pedals are two selectors with cables attached. One of them flips between fresh air and recirculating air,and the other flips between defrost and head/feet vents.

With the truck running,turn your blower on full blast and then play around with the 2 selectors and find the combination that works. I was good enough that while driving I could reach down and flip them with my hand,lol.

Your problem may just lie with one of the cables becoming disconnected of broken from the HVAC controls on the dash. Word of advice...if you pull the HVAC controls out,those freakin cables are a PAIN IN THE ASS to put back into the switches.

Thanks for all your help. I got it lastnight but the "lever" wouldn't stay in place so out came the trusty bag of zip ties. It defrosted the windshield fine this morning.

Good to hear. Is it temporarily fixed,or repaired for good?

I've heard of bicycle brake cable being used as replacement cable.

man you know zip ties = perminent fix duh

well that's usually how I put things back together after I lose all the nuts and bolts.

I put it back together to be quick release. Haha
