you dont really NEED 4x4 fenders either. most of us just buy them because we like the look of the flared fenders. Sometimes your wheel combination may have your tires sticking out a little further where they rub,so the 4x4 fenders give a little extra clearance.
I had 4x4 fenders on my truck, and I ran 17" Escalade rims with 2" drop spindles. The spindles make the wheels sit out a little further,so they rubbed on my 2wd fenders even going straight. I got the 4x4s and still had to cut the lip out of them, yet I'd still rub occasionally, but only if I turned near full lock.
