You ight find better access to the rivets if you can drop the column down by looseneing the support under the dash

I'll see what I can do with it. I've got a mini dremel I can use if needed.

that would probably be alot eaiser to get to them then an angle grinder.... when i was removing the ignition out i wasn't worried about hurting anything it was a parts truck anyways...

I dropped the column down and used my trusty air powered cut off tool and cut a slot in each rivet, unscrewed them and popped the ignition off. I think the entire job took all of 10 minutes.

Now the hard part will be how to remove those same rivets from the truck sitting out at the wreckers.....

Battery powered Dremel would be my suggestion. Have used mine several times to do miscellaneous glass engraving. Should do fine for slotting a couple of rivets.

Take the whole column out and do it at home. . offer to.bring it back to them. . .they probably aren't going to care if you do.

Once the ignition lock is gone out of a column, and torn down as far as you have to get it. . .I don't think there is going to be much value to them anyway.

As far as that goes. . .you could just install that one and bring the one you already took apart back to them.

Pssst. . .don't forget to get the door locks. . . while you're there. . . .

I was thinking of cutting the wires for the ignition all together, splice on some extra length, then install a 3-position switch somewhere out of the way/under the dash. I had to do it with a little Nissan we had in Iraq when the ignition broke. It's pretty convenient actually. Then I just use the key for the locks until I figure out how something else. Any ideas would be great.

I ended up taking the whole sleeve with the ignition out of the truck, as well as the entire interior...and took it back home and just swapped steering column sleeves and presto, running truck.
