For the ford escorts there is a sensor on the IP that sends a signal to the tachometer. Since it is a 4 cylinder it is possible (in theory) to wire this sensor into the Mazda factory tach. 84-87 Escorts, 626, topaz, and lynx diesels all had tachs from the factory.
