This will only work with single coil ignition systems.
Don't even bother if you plan to use a multiple coil engine!
When I did my V8 swap, I wanted to keep the tachometer looking factory original.
I noticed that the Firebird that supplied the engine, had a tachometer made by Denso, so I looked into the differences between it and the Mazda tachometer... also made by Denso.
They looked identical, but it turns out, the Firebird gauge was balanced differently because of the way it was indexed(clocked) in the dash, so the motor couldn't be used.
So... all that is needed is the small electronic control board.
If you go to Pick-A-Part to get this, pull the gauge apart before you buy it. You may get it for next to nothing.
There are other cars out there that can supply your parts, but I know the 84 to 92 Firebirds will go together like I outline here.
If you do a V8, or V6 swap this mod will be the same for either,
just make sure you get the part from the donor car that has the engine you need the tachometer for.
First you gotta pull the whole gauge cluster and remove the five screws that hold the tachometer in.
Note the empty holes.
When you pull it out, it looks like this.
To remove the board, gently pry up on the locating pins. You may need a small screwdriver.
Now, remove the red and black wires. Take note of their location for reassembly.
Here's the Firebird board, ready to go in.
For some reason(I don't remember why), I made changes to the locating pins, but it doesn't matter.
If the locating pins don't line everything up properly, just cut them off.
The red and black wires are long enough to allow you to mount the board to the gauge cluster before you put the rest of the tachometer in.
Ready to put it all back in.
On the left is the factory Mazda tachometer.
The one on the right is the modified tachometer with the Firebird board.
Back in the truck... mod complete.
Edit: Removed false Camaro information.
