Well, if it was me, I'd run the older style 2.3. I have a 91 2.3 Ranger and it is DIS, therefore, you can't change timing without reprogramming ECU. 89+ Rangers used the DIS system, whereas the 85-88 Rangers used points ignition system. The best Ranger 2.3's to get are an 86-87, because starting in 86 (IIRC) they started using a one piece rear main seal, and in 88 they reduced the crank main bearing journal sizes. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure that is accurate. Using the points ignition system is almost a necessity when doing a turbo setup unless you want to spend loads of time and money tuning your ECM for an 89+ 2.3. If you end up needing more timing as well, you can get the dizzy recurved, but that's highly unlikely, as there is plenty of adjustment to begin with. I know lots about Fords, not so much about the older Mazdas.
