Mark - before I did my '88 B2200 engine myself Oct. 2011, I got quotes from a local machine shop and a local garage, about $2.5K each, and the first did not include installation. I did a Google search before that for engine rebuilders in our Phoenix area, found one or two that included Japanese engines. I never contacted them though.
I also visited an Ebay engine rebuilder in California, near Riverside mid-2011, their place was a lot smaller than I would've imagined. My main issue with dealing with a non-local company is: what does one do if there is an issue? My guess is rebuilder will say: remove engine and ship it to us at your expense, and we'll take a look at it. I decided to either go local or do it myself on mine, and ended up rebuilding mine (new pistons, new rings, new connecting rod bearings, re-machined cylinder head) with the engine in the truck, for about $700 out of pocket. I have a thread in the Tech Write Ups by Members section of the Forum
