These used R-12, and easier to stay R-12 because your system should still contain some R-12 type refrigeration oil. The systems work real good, I'm in Arizona and our afternoons are already over 100F.
Remember, R134a isn't such a bargain either, and the old oil should be flushed out, R134a uses a different oil.
Some of us have stockpiled R-12 cans. By the way, R-12 is still legal to use,a nd legal to purchase (with an on-line 609 certificate) in the US for vehicles that were designed to use it. Ebay always has R-12 (freon) listed, but make sure it's R-12, and that it contains NO SEALERS or CONDITIONERS (UV dye is OK).
Actually, there's an R-12 glut, as very few vehicles pre-1994 with AC are still on the roads.
I've had to repair leaks in the evaporator and in the high side crimp connection in the 19 years I've had it, and also have replaced compressor. You'll need to replace the receiver-drier of course, too.
