Hey guys, my truck isn't running right at all. It will start up, but idles at really low rpms. When you try to drive it, it bogs when you give it gas. It almost acts like a 2 stroke 125 dirt bike with a fouled plug. I have replaced the fuel pump, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and plugs. I put a fuel filter on a couple months ago. Any suggestions?

Check that the vacuum line to the distributor is attached to both carb and distributor, not loose, and not cracked. And that your timing is actually advancing (use timing light) and correct.

Also check your carb's choke operation, and that the wire from the choke heater is plugged into the rear of the alternator.

Cusser, how much advance can these motors take safely?

Mine's set at factory 6 degrees BTDC at idle, and I loosen the AC belt and let it hang down for a better view of the timing mark on the timing cover (paint those white, too).

Most engines can handle like 30 degrees TOTAL advance, that's like at 3500 rpm. So you'd have to either have a fancy timing light or mark the pulley to do it that way. I was suggesting to set up a standard timing light and revving the engine, and see if the mark actually advances. It likely will, but then you'd know. Failure to advance can be bad vacuum hose, bad advance "can" on distributor, or carb not pulling a vacuum from that port. Tee-ing in a vacuum gauge temporarily can help determine.
