Hello all. I am new to this site due to the fact I bought a 92 b2200 . It still has all oem equipment and runs good, my question is the truck has a problem starting after engine is hot from driving (I.e. after driving I kill the truck, try to restart and acts like the battery is dead. But wait 20-30 min and starts fine. When this happens it soUnds like it may be flooding out and even rotated backwards a few times after letting off the key. And my egr valve vacuum is not even hooked up, when I hook it up the engine dies. I have checked the timing but have no vacuum supply to the advance on the distributor. I now i should upgrade to the weber but i can not do that right now .I am a mechanic by perfession but carb engines are before my time.

With the no start when hot, the first things to investigate are battery condition, starter, and the ignition switch.

The EGR causing stalling is typical when the EGR piston is stuck in an open or partially-open condition, check it with a hand suction pump after removing it; clean it out or buy a used one from me.

No vacuum to the distributor means: No Advance. But you already knew that.

Thanks for the reply . I have a new starter, I just wasn't convinced enough that it may be the problem. These are the same engines in my forklifts at work, the only difference is the fork lifts are propane.

Check the cable that goes from the Battery pos. to the starter.
If the cable is frayed and/or thin, when it gets hot, not enough amperage will get to the starter.

No disrespect but:
"I'm a mechanic but carbs are before my time"
HOLY SHIT!
That makes us old, or you lucky to live in a world of fuel injection, of which I am only just learning
Congrats on buying a B2200, you're now as sick as the rest of us!!
lol

Does it sound like it runs backwards when you try to start after it's been sitting when it's hot or when it stops after it running and getting hot? (fragmented sentence apologies)

Just a thought but with having it sit for said time and then restarts you may want to check the coil,or icm both would create a no start after driving.Weak coil def shows these symptoms as well as the icm under the distributor.

Well the coil, ignitior , dist cap, plugs and wires are all new. After hot some times takes a few tries on the key to get started. It's kinda hard to explain. Yes when I drive the truck from home to work about 8 miles I park turn it off and try to restart it will just rotate once every 1.5 seconds, if I keep trying when I let off key from start sometimes the engine rotates backwards, kinda like flooded out. The fuel level jn the sight glass is right in the middle and runs like a bat out of hell on the highway. I am just puzzled by the hard start.

Major Woodie - I think the clue is above in what you wrote. To me it sounds like the issue is that the engine is not spinning fast enough to start, like the starter or wires have too much resistance to perform adequately at higher temperatures.

I'd start by measuring voltage acoss the battery terminals while in this "rotate evey 1.5 seconds condition" trying to crank. Maybe measure the amps that the starter motor is drawing while trying to start when hot using a clamp-on ammeter.

I used to have a 1988 ubrban which was hard to restart because the starter motor just wouldn't spin right after engine temperatures got it hot.

Again thanks for the info, I do have a new starter laying around so I will check all cable and resistance, and possible put the starter on it
