A neutral safety switch prevents a vehicle with an automatic transmission from starting unless the transmission is in Park or Neutral.

What year is your truck, and is it EFI? I have a 93 with EFI, and I have a sensor on the tailshaft of my tranny, it tells the computer on the truck if the shifter is in neutral or not, it bumps the engine idle by 100RPM or so when the truck is in any gear, must be some sort of anti stall feature. I can still start my truck in any gear, as long as the clutch is pushed in.
