Hi, i am chase, i am 18 and i just got my license today. I have been working on this truck for 2 years without an issue.

I have a 2200 2.2L with a Weber carburetor. Re built motor with only a few thousand miles. Also it is straight piped.

good alternator, good starter, good battery.

a few days ago i had this truck running good and starting every time. It was idling for a while and i could hear it start to run out of gas so i shut it off. Today i put for gallons of gas. tried to start it, it would turn over and crank but it wouldn't fire at all! i tried over and over and it still would not fire. I waited an hour in case i flooded it and tried again with the same result.

next i put a cup of gas down the carburetor and it still would not fire at all. I looked down into the carburetor and i could see fuel coming in when i was giving it throttle. couldn't get it to fire.

I checked the connections on the coil, distributor cap and that it was tight on the plugs, also I unhooked one of the spark plug wires and tested it with a new spark plug to a ground while turning the motor over and it had lots of spark. So the plugs should be sparking and burning the fuel.... but not for me...

What do i do!!!???? Of course, the only day that my truck won't start is the day that I yet my license

Did i suck some bad gas from the bottom of my tank into my carb or pistons, or cylinder? Maybe bad spark plugs? but i was just running good a few days ago.

Ok good on your test and even spark from coil is good.I would suggest replacing the ignition control module under the distributor cap.In your very well detailed list of things you did a great job of detailing things and I can appreciate that.I would drop the change for a new ICM price may vary but 60-70 bux new and do go NEW on this component.Unless I am overlooking something obvious or thinking too quick and maybe your ignition for the key is the problem on the steering column.May others add/corr me if need be.26 yrs of ownership on my 87 so I am making this suggestion.

Well you need 3 things to start the truck
Gas
Compression
Spark
your getting gas
your getting spark
even if you got a bad spark plug/wire it will run (like crap)
and have you pulled number one plug out to check compression?
no compression = timing belt
also pull your cap to see if the rotor is turning and pointing at #1
since you ran it out of gas you probley sucked some $hit off the
bottom of the tank BAD BAD BAD
is it electric fuel pump or on the side of the block?
IF ITS ELECTRIC DO you hear the fuel pump turn on with the key?
pull the send line off the pump to see if its pumping gas if you cant hear it
basicly you want start as cheap as possiable.
i have a brand new water pump and a timeing belt sitting on my porch
for a 2.2 (auto) $35+shipping
but i almost think its your timing you either jumped a couple teeth and its so advanced it wont start (i think there are 2 diffrent styles of belts) round teeth and the square style
pull your timing cover back a little to see if the belt is still there.
and just because its still there your not in the clear.
pull number one plug out
put your finger over the hole until you feel compression blow your
finger off the hole (gonna need 2 people)
pull cap off see if rotor is pointing at #1 on cap
good luck

If he's got spark at the plugs, the ignition module is working. No need to replace it.

Is the engine spinning fast enough when you crank, like at its normal cranking speed?

Agree, if getting spark through the spark plug wires (and the wires have not been switched in the last few days) and the distributor rotor spins, and there's compression, then the timing belt has not broken. But it should be checked to make sure it hasn't slipped, or lost teeth. And if there's spark, agree that likely not an ignition module issue.

I use aerosol starting fluid as a safer alternative to throwing gasoline down the carb throat. "next i put a cup of gas down the carburetor" - that's a TON of gasoline to use to try prime !!!

Thanks for correcting me.Realizing today when my thoughts were incorrect on the icm idea.I surely hope the better suggestions work on that note.

Got it running strong!

Thanks everyone for the great ideas.

I tried everything pretty much..

I was thinking that i must have sucked some nasty $hit off the bottom of my tank into my motor when i ran it out of gas because everything else was still working good. So i took all the plugs out and turned the motor over to blow out anything nasty in my cylinders. I also cleared my fuel filter with an air hose, it was full of nasty $hit. Then i cleaned my spark plugs and put it all back together and everything started right up!!

Glad you got it running.
Now go get a new fuel filter. You just ruined the one you have.

And get a few spares. Sounds like you've got rust/crap in the fuel tank.
