I have a 89 B2200. I am having an issue with a load whine noise when the truck is in 1first gear or reverse. It only happens when the truck is first put into one of those gears and ready to move. Once I get going the noise stops. Sometimes its helps when I engage the clutch but only for a few seconds. When I release the clutch the noise comes back. The clutch was replaced recently and the noise began. I am thinking it may be the pilot bearing or the throwout bearing. The noise is very frustrating. Not to metion random. It make the noise sometime and other times it does not. Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like pilot or throw out bearring but if its only in first and reverse then it may be in the tranni. there should be a peak hole with a rubber plug/cover on the bell housing. have someone start it and make the noise and see if it sounds like its coming from the pilot or throw out bearing if not then id suspect a tranni issue and drive it till it falls apart. lol but i wont recomend that last part. good luck

i second the throw out or pilot bearing. mine made a similar noise from my u-joints but i think i had a unique case

Ok can you clear up two items. You had a new clutch installed (yourself/shop) and did not replace the pilot brg or throw out?A full clutch kit comes with these two items. Please enlighten us bc this matters to narrow down the noise.I want say transmission yet,but I have had mine rebuilt bk yrs ago and worn parts and noisy in neutral sitting and even drvg.Either way just clarify this unless I just missed something and I am super tired long 12hr day.

I clutch has been replaced. A friend of my fathers did the work. I was a little skeptical of his skill level. I would assume he replaced the bearings if they were in the kit but I cannot confirm it was done. All seems to shift ok (although reverse thats a little effort sometimes). It have the noise mainly when the clutch has been released. Mainly at idle and speeds under 5mph. Also it only makes the noise randomly. Sometimes I can drive half a day with no noise. But then I get ready to park and it sounds off. Its really load and noticable.

I would def ask if the pilot was done and throw out.The reverse being annoying points to the shift fork,or the internals of the trans itself. Can be a shift fork issue or the trans internals if the above were actually done.I might suggest at least changing your gear box oil and see what that looks like when you do it.I run 75w90 gear oil (coastal brand) auto zone and it holds 2.0 quarts.I would def look at the drain plug for lots of metal for wear.Granted changing the box oil want help the noise necessarily however may give clues to the metal wear going on internally.
